It’s that time of year, again: as we ease our way into the start of spring and some slightly warmer bouts of weather, festival season is also now upon us! Whether you’re at Coachella, staying in the UK, or heading out to Ibiza or Malta for a festival in the sun, chances are you’ve already had a think about the sustainability of these events.
That’s why, today, on the RAINE Clothing blog, we’re going to be sharing some of our top tips to help you stay as eco-friendly as possible whilst you’re enjoying your next festival!
1. Plan your travel
Okay, hear us out: we know you’re going to plan your travel to and from the festival you’re heading to! But, have you considered how you can make your plans a little more sustainable? For example, if you’re going to a festival with a group of friends, arranging to meet at one location and carpooling to the festival itself could be a great way to reduce your whole group’s carbon footprint (and means you’ll have some great company on the way, too!). If the festival you’re heading to has a coach or shuttle service, you could even consider using public transport for all or part of your journey – you won’t have to worry about parking, and chances are it could even work out cheaper than going by car!
2. Don’t be a litterbug
Of course, we all do our part to reduce litter whilst at home, but it can be all-too-easy to fall into the trap of not disposing of items correctly when you’re surrounded by other festival-goers who may be doing the same thing. Dispose of your rubbish properly, find recycling points when you can, and don’t fall into the trap of thinking you don’t need to take your tent home with you – items like tents, sleeping bags, and even clothing are often left in huge numbers at the end of a festival, and will almost always be sent to landfill. If you don’t think you’re going to want or use these items after the festival’s over, consider donating them, instead.
3. Reuse, reuse, reuse
One of the most common sources of waste at festivals is, unsurprisingly, plastic bottles and cutlery. These ‘disposable’ options are super easy to grab if you’ve not got any with you, but they also have a pretty detrimental impact on the environment. That’s why, if you can, packing reusable cutlery, bottles, or even cooking utensils (if you’re planning on making your own meals) can make a huge difference to how sustainable your festival experience is.
4. Opt for biodegradable glitter
Naturally, whichever festival you’re heading to this year is bound to be defined by one term: sparkly. Glitter and festivals go hand-in-hand, but unfortunately, traditional glitter can be incredibly harmful to the environment. Have no fear, though; there are biodegradable, sustainable options when it comes to glitter – so even your sparkles can be eco-friendly!
There we have it: some easy ways to help make your festival experience this year a little more sustainable! Of course, if you’ve got any great tips to help make festival-going more eco-friendly, we’d love to hear them – be sure to drop them in the comments, below!
