Shopping for Eco-Friendly Clothing this Veganuary

If you’re practicing Veganuary, this month, you’ve likely spent a lot of time thinking about your food and drink consumption, and meal planning the best ways to incorporate veganism into your day-to-day life – but there’s one thing you might not have considered when it comes to living a more vegan lifestyle: clothing!

That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide to shopping for vegan and eco-friendly clothing, which fabrics to look out for, and a little more about what makes RAINE Clothing vegan-friendly.

What is Veganuary?

Before we go into more details about what to look out for when it comes to vegan-friendly ethical clothing, we thought we’d share a little more about exactly what Veganuary is, and how you can take part next year, if you’re not already.

Started by a charity of the same name, Veganuary is a 31 day challenge that takes place for the whole of January, which challenges those who take it to live a fully vegan lifestyle for the entire month. It’s grown massively in popularity over recent years, with over half a million individuals taking part in 2021 alone. It’s also the reason that you’ll likely notice an abundance of new vegan meals and products at the beginning of each new year, with more and more brands supporting the event with vegan-friendly offerings and solutions.

Veganuary was implemented to showcase just how easy it can be to choose less animal-based products, which in turn lowers the carbon footprint of those participating. It’s an exciting event, and one that we at RAINE Clothing fully support!

What to look out for when shopping for vegan clothing

Whilst a lot of the focus remains undoubtedly on the food when it comes to Veganuary, choosing to opt for vegan products, such as cosmetics and clothing, can have a massive impact on the environment, too, so we’d recommend incorporating those products into any Veganuary participation – or at least trying to!

When it comes to clothing, there are a number of animal-product-based fabrics that are utilised by a lot of fashion brands – leather, lambswool, fur, and silk are all examples of materials which use animal products in their production, and therefore aren’t vegan. Luckily, however, due to how quickly vegan products are growing in popularity, there are plenty of cruelty free and vegan alternatives which are available. Faux leather and fur are both highly popular, even in brands which aren’t necessarily thought of as eco-friendly, and many high street companies have implemented the use of cruelty-free shearling and silk alternatives, too.
If you’re not sure what to look out for to ensure your purchases are eco-friendly and sustainable, our post on the best eco-conscious fabrics is a great place to kick start your more eco-friendly lifestyle!
